Biz Tip # 9: Craft your "Elevator Pitch Plus"

Definition:

You’re probably familiar with a traditional elevator pitch. It’s the short-n-sweet summary of what you do, timed so you can wow that important someone during a brief elevator ride.

At Aviatra, we encourage you to develop what we call the Elevator Pitch Plus.

We call it that because it provides your listener (that important someone) with what you do PLUS whom you do it for and why they need it.

Let me explain.

The format is:

I [thing I do] for [my customer] who [more info about my customer] so that they [what I help my customer do].

Here’s an example:

I make planners for busy moms who want to stay organized so that they can get everything done.

Why you should care:

Often, when we’re asked at a networking event or when meeting someone new (or on an elevator), “what do you do?” we stumble.

We go on and on about why we started our business and what makes us so passionate about it. It’s way too much information to offer as an answer to that simple question.

OR we go the other direction and barely say anything: “I make planners.”

When we use the Elevator Pitch Plus format, we give plenty of information about what we do, whom we help and how they benefit. But we don’t overshare.

I like to think of the Elevator Pitch Plus as a teaser. If someone isn’t really interested in your answer, then you’ve done your part by sharing the info they requested.

But if they do want more information or are intrigued by what you just shared, they will ask you follow-up questions. And that’s your opportunity to share the whole story if you want to. Maybe they will even become a customer!

Give it some thought.

Try to create your own Elevator Pitch Plus (EPP). Does it feel good as a succinct-but-helpful answer to the “what do you do” question?

If you practice it a bit, I think it will make every networking event a little easier for you.

And imagine the wonderful conversations that can result from the information you share in your EPP!
